I am a new user to maya and i'm trying to teach myself!

I have been following the dog model tutorial from the free modelling videos and i have stumbled across a problem... When i try to make a union between the head and body, they disappear

Maybe this is a really simple problem but i can't solve i!

Can anyone help me??
