As far as I can tell, curves are built two different ways in maya. The graph editor has the traditional bezier curves with the anchor points and control points, whereas the CV curve tool describes the shape solely based on where the points lie and how far apart they are from each other. This is how NURBS surfaces are built as well. The math is different. To get a corner, place 3 CVs on top of each other.
