It is a monster project indeed, just watching it took me ages but it's a great project which is why it's still on the site even though it's from Maya 6. Here's a WIP from someone who followed it a year ago

The downside for this tutorial would be that the video and audio quality wouldn't be as good as for newer stuff, but I think you can learn tons from it if you can live with that
