It is hard to say with so little information about the scene, there are any number of reasons for a render to crash.
Some things might be not enough RAM, your start and end frame have not been set in render globals,run out of room on the HD, if there is animation something entering scene at frame 5 that mental ray does'nt like. To help you i am afraid more info is needed.
