Need help- mesh appears deformed (beginner)

I'm modelling a blade in Maya and encountered the following problem. Part of my mesh appears deformed as can be seen in the second screenshot. The model has UV mapping and the vertices are merged after combining the original and duplicated backside. How can I fix the problem?
