Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Heh. If you want to see MainlineX's posts, go visit the Finished Work forum. 1/2 of his posts are like that. :p

Hrmmm. I wonder if I fall into the "rudeness" catagory. user added image

If you all recall a post I made about how people critique isn't very helpful if all they're going to say is "Wow! That's awesome!" or "Great work!". A critique is meant to dismantle a work and discover either its flaws or applaud its highlites. But for every single post to read "GREAT WORK!" was getting a little monotonous. How are you supposed to learn anything if everything thinks you're already doing a great job?

Granted, SM is a place for newcomers to Maya and some of them are just starting out. So they tend to see the majority of the work here as much higher quality than what they can produce, so their reaction will be to praise what they see. But for the rest of us, the ones who have been at it for more than a minute, we should be more constructive with how we critique. There was a time when even the mods were following this path. And because everyone got so used to it, when I started critiqueing the way that I do, people got offended. Thought I was ripping them apart. But I was just being honest and instead of taking what I said as constructive, they felt abused, embarrassed, and humiliated. So they felt I was attacking them personally.

Sorry, just wanted to touch on that for a minute.

What I'm sure you're talking about when you say rudeness is some of the harsh statements being said by a few of the "new" members. Our older, more salted members know how to handle themselves. It's all the new people coming in that have to learn the ways and grow accustomed to how we do things here at SM.

This is to be expected. Anywhere you go you'll have those kind of people. But it doesn't mean it will be tolerated. We try to cope with these individuals by letting them know that their treatment of others here should be like how they want to be treated. If the problem persists, then we delete their posts. If they contiune then Kev or Dave hit the BANNED button and the problem is gone. user added image

As for the WIP forums, of which I am Moderator, I will admit there has been a bit of negligence on my part. But as was stated earlier, it's because of the job. Real life sucks sometimes, and I wish I could stay all day on these forums with you guys because you all are so great here. But I have to pay bills, and the hours are long for me. I get on when I can now and when I do I usually reply in mass. You'll know I've done that when my name is in every LAST REPLY spot thru the entire forum. user added image

Mikey has been pretty good at backing me up in the WIP forums. He's been handling a lot of the problem children rather well and keeping the place clean. I, on the other hand, have been going thru and cleaning out all the oversized images that some of you still can't seem to get under 640x480. user added image

I try to reply to most of the posts in the WIP forum. Some I offer suggestions, others I simply say "keep it going". But mostly, I try to keep a presence there. If the consensus is that we need another mod at the WIP forums, then by all means bring one on. Nothing wrong with sharing the wealth. user added image

But as for those rude individuals, the next time you see something out of line, let one of us know and we'll deal with it ASAP. if you see someting like that, check how many posts they have. Guaranteed it will be in the 10's. They'll come and go, or we'll ask them kindly to leave. Either way, it's under control. user added image

I would also just say that for people posting in the wips....post if you're really interested in an honest critique. Don't just fish for compliments to get a little ego stroking out of it. There are tons of 3D artist on the web....look at their work....look at your own....do you see a major difference? WIPs are good if you're stuck on a particular issue while modeling....folks can help you overcome the hurdles so you can continue. My point is, you should take a good hard look at your models and do an honest self-evaluation before asking for critiques.

Dave, Some of the problems ive seen have been people ripping apart someones model, which although tells them what they need to work on. They dont do it as eloquently as they could. And usually neglect anything positive in the model, giving the person an idea that they should scrap the project and move on to something else. More people need to see that showing someone what they are doing right can help them almost as much as showing them what they are doing wrong.

TD: There's a right way and a wrong way to tell someone their work isnt up to par. When it comes to the wrong way, if we see it, we deal with it. Like I said, take a look at who's making those comments. Generally it's going to be a newcomer who just wants to stir up some trouble. We;ve had comments like that since the beginning, and while we try to curb it, we just can't simply make it stop. We have no control over that. But like I said, as we see it, we deal with it.

More people need to see that showing someone what they are doing right can help them almost as much as showing them what they are doing wrong.

If all you are is a "YES" man, then no one will ever see their faults. While it's good to tell someone they did a good job, it's not always necessary. And, it's not always good to only tell them they did a good job. If they think they did a great job on everything and no one tells them otherwise, then they won't improve. You can't fix it if you don't know it's broke. Know what I mean? user added image

This is a good point! But I think sometimes it can be nice to get a few encouraging compliments since it helps motivate and drive you on, and make you feel you are perhaps doing something right. I think what I mean is that WIP is great for critiques but it's also good to show off if you feel you have something to show off... or is that the Finished Work section user added image

yeah you normally have to pay good money for that sort of thing round here user added image

Dave I feel your pain with the WIP, it's the forum that I hang out on the most, simply because I was there a year ago (with some horrendous models I may add) but now being actually in the industry I know I have something I can give back to the site and so I do. I actually really enjoy seeing a noob post a new model (which may or may not be good) and then through constructive crits improve and refine it.

Screw the immature little s**t stirrers, they'll soon head off to cgtalk and get ripped apart user added image

I'm talking more about people that throw something together where you can see there was no thought or effort or research involved and it looks that way but yet expect compliments (which unavoidably, people do). I just think people need to spend a bit more time in self-evaluation before bringing it to the WIP section. It may sound a bit harsh but that's just my personal feeling. If they do bring it to the WIP forum, they should have some specific questions in mind if they're having problems taking the next step. I just think that would make things more productive.

You're right...finished projects would be the place to show off and get your final critiques before being added to the gallery.

Hey bro,, it’s all good, as silly as it sounds, it gets a lot better then where your at now, find that one thing that you can do and make it better, the worse thing you can do is kick your own self when your down, I use to have a saying after a lot had happened to me” if life was Prison I’d be it’s B!TCH” but that told me I only had one way to go from there,, that was up baby. So hang in there my man, its all about that game we call life, It dose get better.
