Complex UV Layout in Maya

option box greyed out
I installed maya on my laptop. The problem is half the option boxes for tools are greyed out. But the other half are fine. WHats up?!! IF you know please respond. here are the specs
dell m60
nvidia fx go700
1 gb ram
