CLouds???

Hello Everyone. I am using Maya 4.5 and on a mac, so no fluid effects. I was wondering how can I make fairly good looking clouds, (Ie: aSupercell that develops into a tornado)? I am using particle right noe and while they look ok they are taking up too much time rendering.

Does anybody know how to do this fast and easy?

I did do a search but most were older posts and not exactly what I need. I was hoping someone may have recently discovered a bestter way.

https://www.rustboy.com , he goes over his technique on how he created his puffy clouds in 2D, using a technique employed by us compositors called: "MultiPlaning".

He needed to be able to fly through the clouds as well as a SUPER fast render time, so that's what he did

Volume primative>sphere
open properties and apply cloud 3d texture to color. The play with the settings of the cloud texture till you get the patern you want.

Dragonsfire: Yeah I've been there done that , where I run into problems is when I need the cloud to have a very specific shape.

I need to create a Supercell that morphs to having an Anvil top and eventually a tornado forming out of it.

The shape changes over a period of time but I can't seem to get the right kind of particle shader to make it look good.

I used the make cold breath tutorial and tried modifying the expressions abit. This is the closest I've come to getting something looking good. I can get them to look good at the beginning of the animation but when the cloud is needed to get bigger then too many particles fill the geometry and I loos any of the subtle contours that were present in the earlier part.

I may have to create several emitters for various parts of the geometry or something.

Thanks for the help guys, please keep it coming. I wish I had fluids at Work.

actually, if thick clouds are what you are looking for, check out my explosions pt2 video tutorial series.

Check out the sample pic of the debris trails, and those are the thick clouds (using simple particle-cloud shader) that you'll learn how to createuser added image

If you are trying to get specific shape out of the clouds, couldn't you do it with some animated masks in After Effects? Animate your clouds in maya, then build a mask in AE that animates into the shapes you need (the anvil). Might be a bit of back and forth work but might work if I'm understanding things correctly.
