How can i make space?

Ý just made a Ýon Cannon and finished everything else (texturing was really hard ý should learn more about it)
But ý want a background for it like it is flying in space how can i make it
i tried to construct a huge ball around it and give it a texture but it seems there is something wrong can someone help me


(Ým using maya5.0 and just finished the 4.0 suplementels tutorials)

You can download a photo from Nasa of the stars and map it onto a shpere. The make some particle streaks that fly in the opposite direction as your cannon to give the impression of speed.
