Poly question

Sorry to asl what might seem such a stupid question but I am an Extreme Newbie and don't really know much.

I've recently finished Kurts cool Organic Modeling 1 tut and was wondering if I missed a part when I seperate the Arms and the legs from the body the two independent parts remain combined to each other. How can I seperate them. Thank You for any help.
