Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

for such models as cars or places, it is modeled peice by peice.

i find that also more accurate and intuitive.

If you cannot decide I would suggest thinking about it how they manufacture it real life. I would say if its good enough for companys making millions of dollars its efficient enough. Something like a hammer could be made out of one peice, but I guess its whatever suits you best.
