SubD Mirroring Problem. Help Please...

Hi,

I am following a video tutorial (not from here) and the instructor at one point does a mirror to a subd object and then attaches the two parts afterwards. He does this by simply selecting the subd object and going to the subd tab and selecting mirror and the X axis.
I follow this exactly, but my mirror goes downward and rotated on the Y axis. I cannot figure this out. I have deleted history and done what the Maya help says which is to freeze transformations and then do this, but I get the same result.
I have managed to get my desired results by going to poly mode and mirroring geometry with combine on the -Y.

I am wondering what my problem is and why I cannot mirror in the subD mode as shown in the video.
Please explain why if possible. Thanks.

Make sure when you do the mirrror, you go into the little box next to the mirror function and in the properties you put a -1 in teh X so that way it'll mirror properly...

Other than that, I dunno user added image
