More updates. Nothing dramatic.

Texturing is almost done, just need to do some more dirt work and balance a few colours.

As you can see, I'm obviously taking my time with this one...I even found the time to take a nap!

Later...

Holy Crap!!!
Thats R E A L L Y G O O D!!!
I could never do that!
Great job!
Can't wait to see the actual final render!!!!
if you can, just a suggestion, place a camera to motion path and set the frames to 300, and attatch the camera so that it gives a 360 degree view of your guitar model!
Amazing job, again!

, Matt

Yo Matt, you're da man! user added image

Well, thanks four your encouraging words.

Texturing is done by now (the usual, never ending tweaks aside), and right now I'm meditating the idea to add some props (case, note sheets, flat picks etc.) and make up a whole scene, or if it might be better to just focus on the guitar.

I'm rather undeceided...some brainstorming to do...hrmph...

I'll let you guys now if I know.

C-ya,

Mario

Hey, good work. I also am trying to make a guitar and was wondering how you did it so well? First off, how did you make that body, and secondly for the frets, are they each seperate pieces or just extruded?

Hi there

And sorry for the delay - I took a break from my computer for a couple of days and spent my time getting happily wasted...

Anyway, the body: I first took some photos from the guitar, imported these as image planes and traced one side of the outline with a NURBS curve. Next, I copied and mirrored this curve so that I ended up with two curves that I could use for a loft. The reuslting geometry I converted to polys. After a simple extrude I ended up with my base body mesh.

A little later, when I was well into detailing the mesh (that is, too late to really make use of it), I came up with another idea to better optimize the edge flow of the body. For this, I took the original curve, made a number of copies and then scaled and moved them towards the center line. After this I just lofted between them, converted the resulting NURBS surface to polys and tweaked the edge flow as needed. Take a look at the screengrab, and you'll see that the left surface (aka the 2nd attempt) has a much better edge flow, as there are no poles in the mesh.

Frets: starting from a cube, I modelled one fret (and also laid out the UVs), made the needed number of copies, placed them at the proper locations, combined them and finally applied a lattice to resulting multi-piece mesh to scale them to the appropriate size. Voila!

A lot of time was spent on integrating all those nice, tiny bevels to catch the highlights.

But I still haven't made up my mind about what to do next with the model (full scene or nor). I guess I'll wait till I have come off my hangover...

Have you heared of that new First Act Guitar, Lola? That thing is awesome! My friend bought it for our band, and is etting me use it. Its really good, i think it is better then my SG. Ita alot cheaper too, he got it for $1200 and i got my SG for (took two years of band savings) $5500. I know somewone who got offered a Lola for $800. Try out this guitar if you can, its the best guitar you can possibly play.

-Good job Renderizer, btw user added image

Hi Matt, thanks for the info.

Lola looks good indeed, although I find the headstock to be a bit too large and clumsy for my taste.

All that aside, I stopped playing electric some...uh...13 years ago(jeez!).

These days I play only acoustic steel string guitars, either fingerstyle or flatpicking.

If I'd try to play an electric today, I would fall over - there is just no flesh to these planks (pardon!). I prefer really big fat mamas, inspired by Gibson's Jumbo models.

My favourite guitars: Lowden (Irish Luthier). My first high-end guitar was a pretty 2nd hand Lowden with cedar top, which I bought for $1500 (about 10 years ago).

Wow, never realized accoustics were so expensive!!
Well, honestly, I just don't like making that sound that doesnt remind you of punk rock or heavy metal. Or that doesnt get loud enough to blow your head off. user added image I know ther are acoustics with amps, but i don't like that big feeling of something huge on your lap when you play it. Anyways, I think electric is the only way to go. The thing I hate is that almost all of the cheap Electric Guitars are Lotus Stratocasters, 3 single coil pickup, 39", and they ave a shelf price of $30. They usually come whth a 10W amp and then cost $50. Anyways, thats all my opinion. And i guess you can't just see Lola and truly respect it. You have to play it. Then you can truly respect it, not for its sound, but for its pickup quality and stuff. Ayways, keep up the good work with your guitar model. Your doin great!

, Matt

I know what you mean about those Floyds!! I had an Rg 550 and traded it for a Voyager (black w/ gold trim) about 8 years ago. Just bought my newest axe about two weeks ago...

not sure if I did the image thing right.

Well, if you can't see it then it's a Gibson Country Gent 2005 in sunrise orange. I love it. NO MORE FLOYD ROSE!! It has an old-style bigsby tremolo.
