Shaders and textures?

What is meant by a shader and how are they used? and what is then the difference between a shader and a texture?

As far as I know, a shaders is the complete network that contains everything (color-, bump-, transparency-, specularmaps and so on, and the placing info), where as a texture is (I guess) a common word for a colourmap (maybe including some other maps as well)...
