Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Shadow of the Ring art dump

Hey, guys.

I recently got permission to post some work from my first, ever game project, the (unfortunately) cancelled Shadow of the Ring that was being developed for PC/Xbox in 2003. I was a Junior Artist back then, mostly working on environment stuff. I also did some particle effects work as well.

Wow Mike,, this is great stuff, I really dig the particle video as well, it would make as a cool tutorial for the site in my opinion, like the water and the power throws, I know your book shows how to create the swing FX.. Awesome work. Can’t wait till I can get my portfolio done so I can get into the gaming industries.

cool stuff mike user added image

dont suppose you have renders with wireframes showing? It'd be nice to see how the models were constructed without the textures and not having been smoothed/softened.

Cool user added image

It must have been really disappointing when the first game you ever worked on got cancelled user added image

I really like your texturing! It's the main thing I'm working to improve on now - the artist mentoring me is a great teacher user added image. I'm making objects for a very grungy level, so I've been getting to know my rust, scratches and filth. After the game's on the shelves I'll try to get permission to show some of my work.

thanks for the comments, guys. user added image

It did suck to have my first game cancelled, but unfortunately, I had the next 4 after that to follow suit and I've gotten used to it. :p It's a tough industry!

Here's something I forgot to add up there:

https://www.mtmckinley.net/private/po..._cinematic.rar
28.7 mb

Short cinematic we did in about 2 weeks as part of a demo.

I did all the trees and mountains and stuff and animated the sequence where the girl gets thrown into the cage and the last shot where the fel beast flies past the camera and toward the mountains.

Here's a little goblin fight scene I did for this, but didn't end up getting used:

The 2 duds fighting would make a cool addition to the book, like how to setup for cinematic scenes, or some thing like that.. :p

I saw your animation effects, its awesome but I have some questions to ask how did you make them with particles i know how to do smoke and the like but the sparkles and how the swords or attacks leave an effect after them can you tell us how that is done ??

the particle effects were not done with Maya. We developed our very own particle effects editor that I used that has TONS of specific controls that are difficult to emulate in traditional 3D apps.
