Basically, I am really new to Maya (but I really enjoy it)
I don't really know to much about it so I was just wondering what you experts  think are the most obvious things I need to know, and a good place to start?

Cool, thanks for your advice. I never thought of the help files - D'oh!
I am actually in the middle of the dog tutorial (I love dogs you see) and it is coming along nicely... thanks though!
that guitar you've made on your website is really good aswell
What has helped me most is the Maya 7 Foundations book and the lessons that come with the software. Once you have the basics, other online tutorials make more sense.
I have checked out AutoDesk.com, digital tutors.com, and of course the resources on this site...but for me, the process has been churning through the manuals one page at a time. When I start grasping a concept, then I look for tutorials.
I'm no expert, but one of the now obvious things I have learned is that it takes time...alot of time.
