Could anybody tell me how to "paint" faces to select them, so that instead of having a marquee selection option, i just click and run the curser over any faces that i want to select. I have used that in loads of other apps, but cant seem to figure out how to do it in maya

select your object and go to go to edit>paint selection tool. Press B and LMB to change the size of your brush. Also, pressing ctrl will allow you to deselect faces.

Hope this helps.user added image
