rigging? still applies?

I am looking at the "rigging a low polly man" tutorial and i am wondering if it will still be the best way to do it with maya 7?
If not i would rather get a tutorial that applies to my version on maya. anyone done this tutorial?

I'm using Maya 8 now and the info that's in the preamble seems pertanent to me.
