Selecting Vertices (one surface at a time)

Hi there! I find it rather frustrating that every time I select a patch of vertices to work with on a 3d object, the patch I selected plus all the area on the other side of the 3d object is also selected. Is there any way to turn that off, or control that?

Thanks!!
