How to make images without a bakground?

How do you make images/movies so that there is no bakground, if you only want to see the objects and that you can see through the rest.

look into Alpha maps, i believe maya creates them by default when you render.

in the render window just click the white circle in the black square to view it.

but you need another software to use this (photoshop or after effects, etc.)
