Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Polygon to subds Problem

hey i have a problem with converting from Polygon to subds
it says that it failed to convert

so i opened the script editor to check the problem
and here what it says

// Error: polyToSubdiv1 (Poly To Subdiv Node): One or more edges is nonmanifold.
// Nonmanifold geometry cannot be converted to a subdivision surface.
// To clean up nonmanifold edges, use Polygons->Cleanup with the nonmanifold option. //
// Error: Command polyToSubdiv failed. Open Script Editor for details. //

what should i do

ok heres what you do ..under the Mesh menu select Cleanup and in the option box that appears look under cleanup effect and check mark Select matching Polygons then a little lower under remove geometry check mark Nonmanifolder geometry then hit apply.Your mesh should now have the nonmanifold geo highlighted (it might hightlight faces or vertices but now you know where the problem is. there are a few reasons for these components to be nonmanifold so you will have to check them out , some things that might be wrong include duplicate faces on top of one another , unmerged vertices or maybe face normals reversed.
If you can't identify the problem then a quick solution is to delete the offending faces and use the append tool or the bridge tool to replace them.
