Animating a track or footsteps?

Hi

I wonder how you animate tracks and footsteps in sand or snow for example.

The only thing I can think of is making a object that looks like tracks and animate the transparancy but It doesnt feel like that would do it as tracks tend to go down in the ground a bit.

Help is most appriciated. user added image

Have a look on digital tutors, they had free tutorials on doing this.

Or use an animated bump map.

Great, I'm gonna look up that tutorial, I've always been a big fan of Digital tutors. user added image

And is it possible to animate a bump map or do I link a gradient transparancy map to the bump that I then key?

And thanks for the reply. user added image
