im trying to use ndynamics to create rain.. am i going about this the wrong way? should i just use particles and make them multi streak and mess with them that way and then create a solver for the splash on the ground? or is it easier using ndynamics?

There's a pretty good tutorial here on making rain dynamics using regular particles... nDynamics might be overkill, depending on the type of shot:

With NDynamics i.e. NParticles, they are pretty much teh same as normal partiles but faster. I have moved my particle effects workflow over to n's with no problems (other than not being able to instance a fluid to a particle and remder with MR but thats a bug with Maya thats been about since 2010)
