Parenting.

I learned how to parent my shapes onto my skeleton. However when I move my arm, one of the shapes is moving away from the limb. What could I be doing wrong?

It sounds like there's some double transform going on. Check in the outliner that you don't have shapes parented to each other, in addition to parenting to the skeleton.
