Flipping faces

Hi!

I'm watching the Digital tutor video series building the Quadruped Monster.

I'm having a problem with faces flipping backwards and Normals<Reverse isn't working. Any ideas?

If you go to lighting in the vue port panel and turn "Lighting then Two sided lighting" off this will show witch faces need flipping. Then when you can see the ones that need flipping(black in colour) go select face then select the ones that need flipping then reverse norms........dave

do what dave said, it's always a good idea to turn that off.
you can also do the Normals > Conform as well

...WHY...does this turn on by default chirone?? is there a setting somewhere to default it to 'off' and why is it needed if everyone turns it off when modelling....wasnt hijacking Ponyboy..this may clear up something else too.....

it never really bothered me having to turn it off because it's a one off thing per project so I never looked to see if there was a way to turn it off by default

I don't know why it's on by default either... i'm sure there's some reasoning behind it... i just don't know what and i don't know what to speculate either.
but i'd assume something to do with something... yeah... real perceptive there huh?

also if you changed the thickness of border edges you'll see the issue even if you don't have two sided lighting turned on

go to Windows > Settings/Preferences and in Polygons there should be an option to highlight border edges. tick that and change the thickness to 4.0 and things will be way better

you can also tick Soft/Hard in the edges as well. I find having these on a lot more informative

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it... I've only been using Maya for about a month... so stuff like this can be very frustrating when you don't have someone to ask. user added image
