Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Scaling whilst maintaining original proportion

Just wondering if anyone knew a way around this? Heres a simple object i created for the example. I duplicated the object(the one above) and scaled inwards though end up getting this result.

The result i want is more like this,

I want to be able to retain/adjust the distance marked in red. (I'm not really worried about Y-axis). I know that scaling/rotate all adjust on where the pivot point is located and i have tried moving it about to get a desired effect, though never end up with the same distances.

So any ideas?

I am not sure what you want to do user added image
switch to Scale, then try to ctrl+left click on the axis you dont want to modify. It will modify only the other 2axis

Haha... What i want to modify is the outer edges of the top object and have them be the same distance when you scale. If i normal scale, they end up like the top image i posted. For instance, one side may be 1.5units where as another side may be 2.5 units. I want them all to be exactly all the same.

Get what i mean? or still a bit confused? user added image

ohh i see. try to use the distace tool & snap the edges to it user added image i would do that way.

found an easier way. The relative transform is excellent. Change the absolut transf to relative & do the same with the edges or verts... as you want

I tried using the distance tool though since the objects im modelling aren't connected yet, so its hard to get an accurate measure user added image

About the relative transform, i tried messing around with it and couldn't work it out, so confusing... haha! If you don't mind, could you post an example with the object model i got displayed in the picture? Also i was able to find "relative transform" though no absolute?
