Hello, I'm relatively new to maya and still learning. I'm having a problem rendering.

If you're using the Maya software renderer then that is normal because it doesn't support the smooth preview, however, Mental Ray does.

how can I change it to use mental ray? The 3 options I see are:

maya software
maya hardware
maya vector

maya hardware seems to render it smoothly but my shadows end up pixelated and boxy.
