Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
I don't think you have to focus on texturing/shading, however being able to neatly present your models is most definitely a plus. People get away with simple solid shaders and turntables with some wireframe shots. Just as long as it doesn't take you 3 mins to show 2 models
