Complex UV Layout in Maya

Beveling edges opens them.

When I bevel edges to smooth them it opens up my mesh, is there a way to prevent this from happening or is there another way to achieve a nice smooth finish i.e. on furniture?

Sometimes i ve the same issue in 2011.
Reattach the shader & it ll be good
