Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Edge Flow Right or Wrong? Current Project...

Hi,

I am currently working on a goggles project. I think i am half the way so far and have good looking meshes. But i am not sure how the edge flow effect the materializing and texturing process. Does the edge flow on the screen shots looks right?

The edges are getting narrow in some places and i am wondering if that causes problems when texturing.

You will get some stretch in your textures when you smooth polys thats why its important to lay out your UVs correctly, your mesh looks OK the only thing I would do is take out the edges to make quads that should straighten up the edge also................dave

So will i be able to texture and mat the big main piece without any strecthes if i make the UV carefully? Will this mesh let me do the UV map without any problems?

The thing with the smaller front ring mesh, is that i modelled it in 1 piece and had to make some corrections explained here https://simplymaya.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37048 when i take the edges out to get quads i get pinching at the corners which dont look good. Maybe i should have modelled inner pieces that gives the gear look seperately. But since its 1 piece i have decided to leave the triangles. Do you thing its a major problem?

Could you show a picture without the smoothing, These are not major problems. You could create some UVs to see whats going on, just auto map it then stick a checker pattern on it...............dave

I tried to UV this piece. But having streches as you said. I have checked some solutions but cant get any result.
Smooth Mesh > Extra Controls i unchecked do not smooth UVs --> bad result...
Map Borders > Do not smooth -- > no result.
Tweaking UVs wont help at all.

How ever i found some post saying something about changing the border of UV. But couldnt get any further with that. I attached the UV map of this object. For number 1 and 3 i am planning to make different textures. The body of the ring will be another texture. I thought this might be the best UV mapping solution for that kind of plan. What do you think about the streching and map? user added image

I cannot see any stretching only a UV border witch is expected.............dave

Edt:Sorry I can see now that they are stitch together, try selecting the UVs only in that area and unfold
