Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Mask selection

Hi my selecting mask has gone gaga,

When I go to select verts and drag across an area it selects objects in background as well.

I have reset preferences, but still acting the same?

Thanks

I have looked in maya preferences and it could be you have "ignore selection priority" ticked, if so untick it...........dave

Your a star. Thanks Dave.

While your here, are you any good at modelling.
Im having difficulty with two areas of my model, getting smooth geometry.

In each case Im trying to smooth a particular area without getting crease along the rest of the model.
The second one Im trying to create a cut in. But again, adding edges affects the whole thing.

Ya, see the notches cut out in the spherical joints.
And below I have a smoothed cube, I have tried using the split polygon inside the extruded areas but I still get noise on the surface.

excellent, I was working with a smoothened cube, but Id say the same principal should work.

Incidently, do you know any good modelling tuts that cover more advanced techniques like this?

I think you will have to wait for Jay to do one as far as I know this is not standard practice for modelling. I was not sure what the other part you were trying to model so give me a pointer.............dave

The other part I was just having trouble getting it to be smooth again at corner.

Just wasn't sure if this was the correct way to go about it.

You can select those verts then go to mesh, average verts that will smooth them out a bit or do it manually or use the sculpt tool set to smooth or delete a edge...........dave
