AE vs Premier

Hey guys, I started editing some clips for my brother. I started with AE and realized that maybe Premier was a better suited program. Is this a valid thought (never used premier before so would have to learn it)? Also any idea if its possible to change a project from AE to Premier without restarting?

i did my reel in iMovie... i guess this is the wrong forum for editing software, but my guess would be premier. professionals use fcp or avid.

I think there should be a way to export your timeline from AE to premier... not sure how though. Does this involve compositing? If so, then stay in AE. If it's just lots of video footage, premier is probably your best bet.

Be very careful how you set up your project in Premier cause once set up it can't be changed (resolution, pixel aspect ratio, frame rate etc). Do a sample clip before you start your project, chances are you'll end up with black bars on top or bottom or stretched image.

As Stwert said premier is good for live action. It's easier to put video clips in (just drag and drop in timeline, and it's very easy to change the durations of the clips or slow them down or speed up.. match with music etc. But if you put in animation (24fps) you might end up with artefacts (ghosting, 3:2 pulldown, etc)

alright so I havnt had a chance to do anything since I posted this, this was done using AE going to try to recreate it in premier just to see the difference....anywho, let me know what you think of it. By the way the slow motion when doing the 540 over the staircase is a little jagged..need to work on that a bit.

For that kind of editing (just a series of live video clips) Premiere is all you need.

After Effects is more useful for adding titling and compositing in other digital elements and creating them as clips that can then be edited together in Premiere. AE is used a lot in TV to create the bumper clips you see for news, sports, and to promote up coming shows and stuff.

AE is most useful for stuff like this....

Then you take that clip and edit it into a larger project using Premiere.

as the others said, use Premier for only editing.
AE is mostly used for Motion Graphics and really isn't made for editing videos. That's what Premier, Final Cut, or Avid Media Composer are for.

I personally use Final Cut for editing.
