Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Modelling with textures?

Is it possible to edit/select faces with an inputted matte(texture). I'm basically following a tut dealing with max and the 'vol select' and wondered if there is a similar function in maya. I have tried searching the forums but without much look.

i am aware of the maya feature that allows one to create geometry from vector images but it is through bitmap images i want to model from.

Thanks

Don't worry about it; we're here to help!

There isn't any stock feature that I know of. I did a quick search, and nothing really came up, so I assume that there probably isn't a tool for this. It wouldn't be hard to make one, but I don't have the time right now sadly.

Actually you can import vector art that is in illustrator path format into maya. I use it all the time but not many people use maya nurbs any more so it's becoming a bit of a lost art.

It comes in as nurbs curves. You can then use bevel plus to make them 3D or you can use the curve themselves and extrude surfaces from them.

It's great for bringing in custom logos to turn into 3D or things like tire tread patterns and such.

I found this youtube video. Not sure how up to date it is but gives you the basic idea of how to import vector art created in ps, exported as an illustrator path, and imported into maya.

You could also create a displacement map and convert to polys but I think you would have more control doing it ctbrams way................dave

Thankyou for all your responses. The vector to geometry function is quite cool, i've used that before, Il have another look at the displacement to geometry conversion. It isn't really complex what im trying to achieve so im sure there are other ways to skin my proverbial cat.

thanks again

Hey Connie, if you can hang on, I can code up something to do exactly this later tonight.

Hey, you don't need to do that! but thanks for the offer. What would you do, write a mel script or could you use python? I cheated a little and used Max.

You could definitely use python for this, but I would use MEL. If speed was a concern, you would really want to write a plugin using the C++ API.
