Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

import trouble

hello. when i'm importing some stuff from another .ma file, i can't name objects with the name of that file. for example, i import into my scene skeleton chain from the file named "skeleton", and i can't name the group of joints "skeleton". it is always changed into "skeleton1". i checked whole scene via hypershade for objects or nodes with the name "skeleton" and didn't find anything.

maybe the material is called skeleton and what does it matter if there is a 1 behind the name? it works doesn't it?

Have you tried using the select by name box in the status line? Try *skeleton* and see what all is selected; might give a clue. Include the *'s

no, can't find anything.
i think, i use "select by name" somehow wrong, because it doesn't show any object i have in the scene.

Im with mastone, sometimes trying to sort something like naming convention error takes more time than doing the scene. If it works...it works, get the job done then look at it later if you have time.

The default import settings of Maya will preserve references. This means Maya uses the filename as the namespace for all the objects etc imported from that file. So "skeleton" is used already for a namespace name. You can use the namespace editor to rename the namespace.

I can see the merit of retaining namespaces especially in production environments where more complex scenes can consist of multiple scene files. For my use of Maya I tend to live with the '1' that Maya sticks at the back of a name.
