How to un-parent two objects?

How do i unparent my objects? I am done with the parenting but they are always together.

I usually just delete the parent in the outliner.

My whole object is vanishing after deleting the parent :-( is there a way i can sent you my maya file and you look at it? That will be a great help

umm I should have made that clearer.
Are you deleting the parent constraint? click the plus button next to the object. there is a little red icon thing and it should be called parent constraint.
