Grid fails to appear

Hey all,
Whenever I load up Maya, I don't have a grid. I have tried resetting the grid settings, deleting my prefs file, and uninstalling and reinstalling the whole thing multiple times. I was considering downgrading to Maya 2012, but my computer's OS is too advanced. On a Mac, if that matters.
Thanks for any help!

Have you gone into Display in the viewport and made sure that Grid is selected?, deleting your prefs should have done this though I believe. Also I have had that issue when my camera's clip plane is set to some outrageous number...is it a new scene or a project your working on?

Yes, I did so. When I go into the settings, I can set the grid labeling to appear, and the labeling shows up fine, but without the actual grid. As well, if it helps, my background is a single solid color, a light gray. This is not the same as pretty much every tutorial I've seen, where the background is a smooth gradient with the grid suspended in space. Any other suggestions? I might just have to do a hard reset and delete all related files :/. I'm working on a new project, but the cameras are all default. No crazy zoom or anything like that. Thanks for the help!

Hit alt+b to toggle through your background colors.

Thanks! Now I can make my background either gray, dark gray, or black... still no grid or background like the ones I have seen in tutorials though! Any other suggestions?

What version of Maya do you have and what do you mean that your OS is too advanced? You should be able to cycle through to the bluish gradient. That's weird.

I'm on maya 2013, running it on a mac. When I tried to download maya 2012 and downgrade to fix the problem, it told me that my OS was too advanced during installation, and that I could only use OS X 10.5.x and 10.6.x. So apparently my machine can only run maya 2013. Should I just try uninstalling everything? Maybe it's a driver issue? I'm not sure. This seems like a pretty unique little glitch I'm experiencing...

Just found out something else: I have two light gray colors. My cycle, when pressing alt+b, goes: black, dark gray, light gray, and then light gray again. Could this mean anything?

Are your video drivers up to date, what card do you have? Do you experience anything weird in any other 3D environment?

Did a full reinstall and deleted all files... MY GRID HAS RETURNED! Thanks to everyone who helped me out in this thread. Seems like a great community you guys have here for unexperienced modelers and pros alike.
