This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Go over to creative crash web site and search for sp paint script. This will enable you to paint instances of a single clump over any poly object. Use paint effects to make you initial clump convert it to polys and zero out its transforms before you paint.

Paint effects will give you a great result after convert to polys. Delete the shader and assign your own. Then use the script to distribute it. I've used this technique many times in clouding last week for a print job.
Show us some results when your able to!!

I haven't seen any fur grass that looks as good as the proxy route. To me, the fur grass almost always ends up looking like alien fur. I even ended up writing a script that automates the proxy generation.
