Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

unwanted viewport duplicate

I changed the viewport-cameras, so I have perspective, top, left, right.
Upon reloading my scene however Maya just set one viewport to the exact camera of one of the other viewports(viewport-panel/view), e.g. now I have two left views, no right view.
When I try to change this by selecting a Predefines bookmark, say for the right view, the other viewport with the same view changes as well.

What is happening?

Since both viewports are using the same camera, any changes you make to one will update in the other. What you should do is use Panel>Orthographic>Right, instead. This changes the camera being used and not just alter the angle.

Thanks!

I cannot say I get this system however, e.g. orthographic front and side seem to give me the same view. Choosing a predefined bookmark and a panel->orthographic however gave me what I wanted (top, left, right, perspective).

I somehow came to a frontview, but it does not show the image plane which should be visible setupwise and also shows no grid although grid is checked in the show-menu. It also makes trouble when i try to select components, move them around etc. - not showing the manip etc...

In every scene Maya creates a set of default objects, some of these are the persp, top, front and side cameras. The options under the "View" menu act on the current camera being used by that particular viewport, so the "Predefined Bookmarks" doesn't actually switch between camera objects.

The options under the "Panel" menu allow you to change cameras and viewport(panel) layout. Hope this helps clear things up!

Edit lol didn't get to post this before your last reply. Does the grid and manipulator handles show in other views? Is "Grid" checked under the "Display" menu?

Thanks, that did clear it up. With some more experience I will get the drift, I'm sure.

Yes, Display->Grid is checked and it is showing in other viewports.

EDIT: okay, switching around between panel(orthographic) and predefined bookmarks the grid has reappeared. I do not understand why it was gone however.

Side-quest(ion): How do I properly set up image-planes/reference-image-planes so that they are only seen when wanted, e.g. image for left side of object only seen when looking through camera/viewport looking onto left side.
Right now they are in the way frequently and I have to move them around many times.

In the attribute editor for the given image plane, at the top there is an option to set it only to display in the specified camera.
