2012 joint/bone issues

I'm using 2012 and I've always had issues with the bones not showing up or being visual, but they still work just fine. I read somewhere that it's a hardware issue in the graphics card, either way they still work. Now all of a sudden I have this issue (pictured below). The top two are orientated the correct way but the bottom (ankle) is wrong, easy fix but the bones that I couldn't ever see are now pointing in different directions. Has anyone ran into this or know how to fix the issue? I don't want to keep going and find out I can't get rid of them or fix it. I just thought of this when I was typing, is it the long bone/short length possibly but why are the pointed horizontally?
