Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Help with Move and Sew UV action

Hi, i'm relitively new to Maya and using it as it's part of my uni course. I'm having an issue with UV mapping, specifically with moving and sewing UV edges.

Here are the two edges i am trying to move and sew together. I am working along materials that the university has provided, saying that the result of the move and sew UV action should result in this:

However, when i do the move and sew UV action i end up with this:

So i'm wondering what i'm doing wrong and how i can get the result that the tutorial wants me to? Thanks for all and any help in advance.

(Also advice on how to make the pictures actually show up in the thread would be appreciated.)

Hi,
First of all for the basics, with move and sew you join the edges which belong to the same UV's. It can be that the UV edges are on different locations in the UV editor but at the object its one edge only. Because of the required texturing you may need to join these edges to avoid having a break or seem in the texture. This means of course you can move and sew only UV edges which belong together.
I am not 100% sure whats your issue there, but for me it seems the edges you try to join aren't belonging together and an other UV edge gets attached.

Regarding the pictures it works with the advanced reply under manage attachments. Right now I am having issues too and my browser crashes, when I try to upload pictures.

I guess you are doing automatic projection for the UV's?
It might work different in the tutorial because of a different way of projection, so you might get a different arrangement of the UVs and edges.
Are you doing right click and choosing "edge" before doing the move and sew? In your second picture it looks like you have the complete shell marked.

Yeah, i am using the edge select tool to use move and sew, just highlighted the faces to show they are next to each other on the model. Automatic Projections? Sorry, i don't know what that is, i'm really new to using Maya.

There are ways to come to the UV's. Easiest way is simply to mark the object and open the UV editor. You see an arrangement of the UV's and faces but may be over laid. A better way is to us a type of projection under "UV" while marking the object: "Automatic", "Planar", "Cylindrical" or "Spherical" depending on the shape of your object. It will give you a better result. This actually should be part of the tutorial to explain this and when to choose which way. Depending on the way of projection you may get a different arrangement of the UV's.
For a cube like in your case a automatic projection is applicable. But you could mark also each face and make a planar projection and then you can assemble the 6 sides in the UV-editor. Check out also Youtube tutorials for UV for example a fast one: https://youtu.be/DjqjdEoaItk
