Invisible objects when loading scene

I'm pretty new to Maya, I've only used it for about 3 or so days but I'm having some trouble when loading/opening my scene.

I have saved my character model which automatically saved in an .mb file but when I open Maya and load the scene there's nothing there except my references and my layers which I assigned to my model.
The strange thing is that I have an old layer which contained another object which appears when I turn the layer to visible, however my other layers are all set on visible but there's nothing there.

I've tried flicking the visibility on/off, I have switched between the render viewports, tried to highlight where the model was but its like it doesn't even exist.
I have looked at what others have said on similar topics and I opened my outliner (not sure what it does though) and I can see there are a bunch of objects which could be my model. I can click on them and view the attributes but that's about it.

Does anyone have any idea why its doing this and how to get my model back?
Thanks

I am using Maya 2016 on mac

The Outliner shows a list of all the objects in a scene, it's not set to show every little thing by default but that shouldn't be the issue here. Are any of the objects you created grayed or dimmed in there (in the way that the default cameras persp, front, side etc are)? If so, then the object is hidden, select it/them and hit shift+h (show selection) and see if that works. Also, there is a "Show" menu among your panel menus (right above your 3D viewport), click it and make sure that particular type of object is checked on, in this case, I'm guessing "Polygons".

If not then upload the file to a hosting site (google drive or whatever) if possible and link it here or in a pm.

You could also try selecting your model in the outliner, then pressing "f" on the keyboard to move the camera to the extents of the model.

It could also be that your near/far clipping planes could be messed up in your camera. Try creating a new perspective camera and see if your model shows up then.
