Simply right-click on the values of your shader in the hypershade, and set a keyuser added image

yup...

Thought id just add, for anyone else's benefit, if u are animating say a character and u have texture mapped it, make sure u parent the texture to the character object. Otherwise when u come to move the character, it will lose its textures as they remain static, in that sense user added image
