the dongals I've seen are literally as big as maybe a cigerette lighter... not that difficult to carry.

This is a hardware dongle.
This one was used some years ago to drive a CAM application.
My watch is yet again used for scale. As Mike said, it´s quite easy to carry around.

Hi slickrenderer,

damn funny animation with that hippo... user added image

there are things for and things against using a dongle...

some of them have allready been mentioned...

as far as I have understood the Maya license methods there are nodelock, floating and a dongle...

nodelock is to your networkcard... so if you in the future get a new computer which you will install Maya on you will have to take the networkcard with you into the newcomputer since the license is attached to it...

eh... floating is also related to the networkcard but in a more broad manner were a network is involved...

the donglelicence is for the thingie on ADL's image... which you stick in the parallelport of your computer... and you can then use it on any machine with a parrallelport and windows...

floating and nodelock can be used with Mac, linux etc... so it is also a question of which OS there is going to be used... to make the disision about if you want to use a dongle or not... user added image

e.g. if you don't use a dongle you are stuck to a specific machine, with the dongle you can use different machines... aslong they use windows...

you can read more about it on this page... Glossary of Terms for Licensing Maya 4.5

switching your Ethernet card assuming it's not intergrated to the mother board will change your ethernet address. I'm almost positive windows will assign one to it. Can anyone confirm this because I may be wrong.

Hi Roach,

I'm not sure whether you mean the IP adress or hardware/MAC adress, when you say "change your ethernet address"

because it is the hardware ID or MAC address they use of the Networkcard, and that doesn't change even if you put your networkcard into another motherboard/PC...

more info here... "What is Hardware - MAC address" or here... "How to Determine Your MAC Address"...
