SGI Monitor

Hi there,

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a SGI GDM 5411 21" monitor for €200 (about the same in US $).

It comes with a HD15 (VGA) plug, so it can be used with a PC.

Someone around here who knows this kind of display? Is it good? Or does it just LOOK good (looking great, to be honest!).

Thanks,

Well, if it's the same monitor that we had in my school a few years ago, then yeah, its a nice monitor.

Good news indeed - but how do I know if it actually IS the same monitor? user added image

I think I'll buy it anyway - €200 is not the worst price for a SGI 21" monitor. user added image

I'm still not convinced that TFTs can hold a candle to CRTs in terms of colour temp/contrast, especially at this price (€300).

There are good TFTs out there, but they sure cost a fortune (or two).

Come to think of it - CRTs have another good thing in advance: you can use them as doorstoppers (pretty robust), too - which is the very reason why I'll stick with them for now! user added image

lol, youre right they have a lil problem problem of color range but then if you feel its wrong you just hit autoadjust and it shows the correct ranges(almost always) brightness is not an issue it has 300 (now i dont remeber the unit) which is exactly the same as the good ones, and contrast is an issue only if you arent looking it on the right "azimuth?" (elevation degree) yet i love it and feel it was money well spent, with a good features per buck ratio compared to other monitors (crt and tft)
plos it has perfect sharpness/crispness and ZERO eyestrain and zero catodic radiation emission (which is a BIG plus)

I think I'll stay with the CRTs for now and wait another two years or so, by which time the price/performance situation might have radically changed.

We'll see...
