In the next month or half, I get the chance to buy a new system. So I want to ask you all to give me some feedback, tips, hints, pointers what to buy. Its a mayor step for me (and my wallet).

Hope you people can help me out here

If you are really serious then i would suggest:

Dual processors (I would choose Opretons)
A high end card for professionals like Quadro
a gigabyte of ram or more
a large monitor (perhaps 2 user added image)

heheh.. I just did a test animation to see what's going on and this is some benchmarks:

I did 90 frames @ 640x480 on the Ocean preset. the end result was:

====================================
Resource Usage At End Of Rendering
====================================
53.699 Mb Peak total size(Estimated)
10.104 Mb Peak arena size
====================================
48.563 Mb Current
0.125 Mb NURBS Surface Shapes
6.667 Mb Render Cache
1.875 Mb MEL
0.125 Mb Transforms
1.000 Mb NURBS AG
0.313 Mb Data Blocks
====================================
Total Time For Render (hh:mm:ss): 01:54:20
Total Elapsed Time For Maya (hh:mm:ss): 01:54:20

not bad if you ask me... almost 2 hours but it was pretty nice compared to my old pc

NoTalent: If you're computer savvy, then I would suggest building your own box. With $3K, you'll get way more than if you store bought or had *ahck!* Gateway build it. ewwww. I said a bad word... user added image
