Freezing a selection

Hi,

I have been working slowly on my first model and I've come across a little problem. Whenever I select vertices sometimes I accidently select some on the far end of the model. When this happens, I'm generally not aware of it until hours or days go by, then I suddenly realize "*@!$% my character's foot is jacked up!". Anyhow, can I select a punch of faces or vertices on one object and temporarily freeze/lock them?

Thanks for your expertise,

Dan

I do know if you want to select the faces just around whare you want to work you could do a View > View Selected in the modeling window. Backface culling might help also..
