modeling chain link and electical cords

I really need some help with modeling chain link to make chains for jewelry and I have problems with making electrical cords for lamps etc. look realistic. Please helpuser added image

Chain links are very heavy crunching (if you are animating), you might want to look at a texture to create the chain links if they are small. Do you have a sample pic?
