Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Use Background shader problems

I am using use background shader with specular color : Black, Relectivity : 0, Refl Lim :0, Shadow mask : 1.

One key light is included in the scene with shadows turned on.

I am getting ridiculous shadows ( see attachment ) with Use BG shader, but perfect soft shadows with normal render ( see attachment ). Using point light with raytraced shadows.

Using maya software rendering.

Help is appreciated. Thanks

I need to extract the shadows out. I know it can be done by using the native shadow pass in maya, but still am keen to solve this issue, as this is happening in only some of the shots in the entire sequence ( with same settings ).

maybe i'm having a bad day .......

isn't it just self shadowing?
why do you want to separate the shadows anyway? If you are going to comp it then you would probably want to separate the character from the bg.

It is indeed self shadowing, and i will be separating both, but when we use USE BG Shader, it does not gives self shadow, it only gives cast shadows.

Here i have both. Tried to even switch off receive shadows for the char mesh, but then it is a problem when the character picks up any object and its shadow fall on the char mesh.

I M STUCK...

well i did not find a solution to this .
I had to resort to the "Raw Shadow Pass" to get the shadows out. Even the " Shadow Pass" was taking out shadows onto the diffuse colour of the mesh.
