assign hair to faces

how can i assign hair not to the whole object, but only to some faces of it? when i select faces and click "create hair", i get warning message "no object selected for hair creation".

I am sure you have to duplicate the faces you want and apply the hairs to them.
Some call it a hair cap but iva way you need two models.

So eg - you want hair on a head. Select the faces you think would be the hair - copy them - then create the hair on them. If the hair cap messes up your renders turn of it viability.
