Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Modeling and pictures (prints)?

I need to make a few vehicle models and I don't have any blueprints for them. I have some plastic models I think might help me though. My questions are, if I were to take pics of the models i.e. top, frt, and side and doc them up in photo or even paint do you think this will work? My concerns are that the models are so small (plastic and metal vehicles models) that I won't be able to zoom in close enough in Maya to get a clear enough picture. Imagine taking pics of a plastic put together model like you buy from the hobby store and modeling from that but also taking pics like blueprint pics and using them in maya. What do you think?

Have you looked for the blue prints for those model cars ??? - As long as you have the name of the cars you should be able to find the blue prints. Google could be your best friend.

Photos of models would depend on your camera. I am currently building "Cain" from robocop 2 for which I have a really small model (About as Long as my middle finger), but because I have a good been able to take some really good images of it - shame the details on the model are badly moulded. - So its up to your set up and models. If you have the models still in parts it should be very easy to model.

Even with the highest resolution blueprints I usually have to switch to high quality rendering to get decent detail when I zoom in, and then Xray mode doesn't work, so don't worry too much about that, Maya already has it's problems on that front.

As for using photos as blueprints, you'll need to take them from a dead on angle to avoid it causing too many problems, and don't rely too much on them since they'll be perspective and blueprints are normally orthographic views.

What are the vehicles you'll be modeling?
